Like all Pokémon games, there is a plethora of different Pokémon to catch. However, not all of them are as simple as others to catch or even easy to come across out in the wild.

Throughout the years since the game’s release in 2016, there has been a handful of Pokémon that players have found it hard to get their hands on and that sometimes changes as the game evolves.

It can also be a matter of an opinion too as some players have been able to get hold of the “rare” characters easily. But can also be frustrating if you’ve had your eye out for one of the more elusive characters but just don’t seem to be getting lucky.

Here’s a list of some, but not all, of the rarest Pokémon in Pokémon Go right now.

Tips on how to catch the rarest of them all

  • Some, like Pichu and Igglybuff, can only come from hatching eggs. Keep on catching and hatching all the eggs you come across.
  • Travel to different spots. Staying in the same area may be convenient for you but that doesn’t always mean you get the best selection of Pokémon.
  • Make sure you’re constantly levelling up. The higher your Pokémon trainer level, the more likely you are to come across some of the rarer Pokémon.
  • Participate in Raids
  • Keep an eye out on Subreddits and social media groups for locations of some Pokémon. It may not always help but it has helped some players get lucky.
  • Keep checking the nearby Pokémon tab. This will give you a good idea of what’s about and what’s been caught recently.

Hatch as many eggs as you can

Finding and catching rare Pokemon in Pokemon GO requires that you put yourself in the best position to do so, so there are some rare Pokemon that can only be found by hatching eggs.  That means you need to hatch as many eggs as possible when playing the game.  Eggs in Pokemon GO come in a variety of different sizes: 2km, 5km, and 10km.  Once you’ve got eggs and an Incubator.  You simply need to walk around while you have the Pokemon GO app open to count towards the distances required to hatch the eggs.

Stay on the Move

Pokemon GO is all about moving.  From hatching eggs to encountering rare Pokemon you’ll want to have the app open when out and about.  While on the move, make sure you are checking the nearby Pokemon and are familiar with the different silhouettes of rare Pokemon in Pokemon GO.  If you’re a creature of habit, try to journey into new areas to look for rare Pokemon if they don’t spawn on your normal routes.

Participate in Raids

Raids are a great spot to snag rare Pokemon, but these fights can be some of the harder ones in the game.  Keep an eye out for Raid opportunities.  When you see an egg above a gym you can potentially snag a copy of the Raid Boss.

Keep Leveling Up For More Rare Pokemon

The higher that you level your trainer in Pokemon GO the more opportunity you’ll have to catch rare Pokemon.  There’s no shortcuts to leveling up your trainer in Pokemon Go you’re simply going to need to play the game a lot to level up.  In doing so you’ll undoubtedly start catching more rare Pokemon.

Head to verified nest locations

Pokemon GO is a video game with a lot of random elements, but sometimes you can get a read on the patterns of the game.  The Pokemon nests system can sometime help you in finding rare Pokemon.  Nests can sometimes see bunches of the rare Pokemon in exactly the same areas over and over again.  Keep an eye on these patterns for nests in your area.

Earn Medals Get a Catch Bonus

Earning medals in Pokemon GO will give you a catch bonus.  If you catch specific types of Pokemon and complete a medal challenge you can get a catch bonus for that type of Pokemon.  That catch bonus can pay big dividends when looking for rare Pokemon later on so make sure you keep an eye on your medals and try to complete them for the catch bonuses.
