Every dungeon in The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening requires you to not only make your way through to the end and face a boss, but also find a boss key to access the door to the boss. In this game, they are known as Nightmare Keys and the second dungeon, Bottle Grotto, is a little tricky. This guide will explain how you can get the boss key for Bottle Grotto in The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening

As always, the owl statues will give you a hint if you find the beak for it, but those who skip this part may be very confused within Bottle Grotto. Most of the chests are pretty easy to find in Bottle Grotto, but the Nightmare Key one is not as obvious.

If you collect the Compass, which is done by destroying the Shy Guy behind a locked door near the beginning, you will notice there is an unseen chest in the room where you are first introduced to a Pols Voice. Upon entering the room with the Compass, there will be a ding to notify you that you have a chest to get.

To get the Nightmare Key here, you must kill the three enemies in the room in a specific order. The first one to kill is the Pols Voice, which you have to free by moving the blocks below. You can read our guide on how to kill the Pols Voice if you are not sure how to do so. After the Pols Voice, kill the Keese in the room and finally the Skeleton. If you do these in the right order, a chest will appear on the right side of the room that will give you the Nightmare Key for Bottle Grotto.
